Gary W. Carter, Sr.

Gary W. Carter, Sr, aged 65, of Somerset, KY, passed from this life on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Leconte Medical Center in Sevierville, Tennessee.

Gary was born October 7, 1957 to William Elza Carter and Althine Ruth Hines Carter in Somerset, Kentucky.

He enjoyed drag racing, car shows, collecting coal scrips, touring the Bourbon Trail (especially Maker’s Mark), and photography. He was a Team Member and official photographer with the Somernites Cruise.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, William and Althine Carter, and sister Angela Renae Lee, as well as his beloved fur babies Jazzie and Oliver. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 42 years, Sherry Carter; son, Gary (Cortney) Carter, Jr of Somerset, KY; daughter, Emilee Carter of Morristown, TN; grandchildren, Grace Carter, Aurora Weddle, Cameron Carter, and Colton Carter; nephew Adam Godby. As well as his Barthel Coal Camp family, Donna and Richard Koger; extended family member Tony Lowe; and his Somernites Cruise Family. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 20th, 2023 from 3 PM to 5 PM in the Chapel of the Southern Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 5 PM with son, Gary Carter Jr. officiating. Southern Oaks Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements for Gary W. Carter, Sr. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Gary’s name to either the Galilean Home in Liberty, KY or Shriner’s Children’s Hospital at UK Healthcenter in Lexington, KY.
