Willena Atkins

Willena Atkins, 89, of Somerset Kentucky, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Willena was born on March 29, 1934 to the late William and Callie (Muse) Weddle in Faubush, Kentucky.

When Willena was seven years old, her family moved to Dayton, Ohio.  It was there that Willena graduated from high school and met the love of her life, Harold L. Atkins at a citywide revival where Harold was the featured vocalist and song leader.  Willena and Harold were married November 27, 1952, and in time moved to Xenia, Ohio where they lived for many years.  

Willena was a homemaker and a mother, actively supporting her husband in all his ministry activities.  She was also a caregiver for her parents in later years.

In retirement, Willena and Harold moved back to Somerset, Kentucky where they enjoyed being with family and attending church.  After Harold’s death, Willena moved to The Neighborhood of Somerset, a place that she grew to love as home over the last decade of her life, because of its people and staff.

Willena was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold in 2012; and two sisters, Olive Dawes, and Lucille Norfleet.  

Willena is survived by her son, David (and Judy) Atkins of Springfield, Missouri; a niece, Regena Owen of Nancy, Kentucky; two great nieces, Shellie and Missie; and other extended family members.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Gideon Memorial Bible Plan. Southern Oaks Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements for Willena Atkins.
