Steven Tompkins

     September 17, 1948 - January 30, 2016

Steven Tompkins, age 67, of Nancy, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016, at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville.

Steven was born on September 17, 1948, in Vinnie, to the late Charles Edward and Sylvia Mae Lafavers Tompkins.  He married Jane Roy on April 6, 1968, in Ingle.  Steven entered into the U.S. Army five days after their marriage and served his country in the Vietnam War, earning the Purple Heart for his service.  He worked construction and enjoyed farming.  Steven loved spending time with his grandkids.  He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; their daughters, Amy (and Troy) Leaver, of Castalian Springs, Tennessee, and Alisa (and Tim) Elrod, of Clinton, Tennessee; his brothers, Thomas (and Nancy) Tompkins, of Columbia, and David (and Sheila) Tompkins, of Somerset; his sisters, Judith (and R.D.) Floyd, of Nancy, and Charlotte (and Dean) Prather and Janice Watson, both of Somerset; his mother-in-law, Vineta Roy, of Somerset; sisters-in-law, Patricia Tompkins, of Faubush, Kay (and Jeff) Ross, of Somerset, and Linda (and Lindell) Brock and Brenda (and Gary) Luttrell, both of Nancy; a brother-in-law, David Roy, of Somerset; his grandchildren, Zachary Steven, Sarah, Rachel, Savannah, Shelby, Emma, Zane and Sawyer; and many nieces and nephews.

Steven is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Charles “Chuck” Tompkins; and his father-in-law, Fred Roy.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, after 10:00 a.m., in Southern Oaks Funeral Home Chapel.

The funeral service will follow the visitation in the funeral home chapel at 1:00 p.m., with Bro. Ronnie Ford and Bro. Don Taylor officiating.  Interment will be in Mill Springs National Cemetery.   Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #38 Honor Guard.  Pallbearers will be Jason Scales, Noel Whittle, James Whittle, Dennis Wilson, Gayle Roy, Jerry Minton and Jerry Roy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to the Gideon Memorial Bible Plan, the Lafavers Cemetery Fund or the New Pleasant Point Cemetery Fund.
